‘He’ll be a great captain’ – De Gea hails Rooney’s likely replacement

David Gea saves against Sunderland

Manchester United's goalkeeper has been speaking about the club's vice-captain ahead of their next match against Everton.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has hailed the club’s vice-captain Darren Fletcher.

The Scottish midfielder is likely to lead the team in the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney, with an injury to Ander Herrera meaning the Scottish international will almost certainly start against Everton.

But despite the captain’s absence following his red card against West Ham United, De Gea has every faith in Fletcher to inspire another victory.

In quotes published by ESPN, the Spanish international said, “Darren Fletcher is the next captain and I think he will be a great captain.”

Of Rooney, De Gea said, “Of course he’s a really important player for us and he’s the captain, but we have other players ready to play these games.”

They certainly do, with Robin van Persie rediscovering his scoring-form and Radamel Falcao awaiting his first strike since his loan move from AS Monaco.

With Juan Mata likely to replace Rooney behind the front-two, United will also have a player desperate to show he has a place in Louis van Gaal’s side, despite ongoing rumours that he could be on his way sooner rather than later.
