The Frenchman’s new deal will run until the end of the 2017/2018 season, rewarding him for a decent start to his Arsenal career.
Giroud has often been the target of criticism during his time at the Gunners, but Wenger has consistently shown faith to the forward who has bagged some important goals in vital games.
The news may have come a little out of the blue for some Arsenal fans considering the striker is currently unavailable through injury.
However, that appears to have given the forward, his representatives and the club the time to talk through various terms over the two-year extension, avoiding awkward negotiations at a later stage.
Giroud’s importance and significance to the first team was demonstrated after his injury when there were mass calls for Wenger to go out and sign another striker in the summer transfer window.
He did so, bringing in Danny Welbeck in a £16 million deal from Manchester United.
Welbeck and Giroud are very different strikers with Welbeck more versatile and arguably more effective up front in terms of movement and making runs.
However, that takes nothing away from Giroud’s instincts as a goalscorer and he will have his part to play at some point over the course of this season. He showed with a vital strike at Everton that he can keep a cool head in high pressure situations.
He can now settle in the knowledge that he’s not about to be axed or replaced up front because the new deal is the biggest sign yet that Wenger believes he is the man to take the attack forward over the course of the next four years.
Here’s what Arsenal fans make of the new deal on Twitter.

It's a great news that Giroud signs a new Arsenal deal. Now that they have already signed Welbeck, signing a top striker seems less likely.— Mithran (@Rodgerism) September 30, 2014

Great news on Giroud I really like our first 2 centre forwards. For me it's all about wide attackers & centre mid balance - we must rethink— Clive P (@clivepafc) September 30, 2014

New contract for Giroud? Great news. He's been a great addition to this squad and well worth the £12m we paid for him.— Callum (@callumjp92) September 29, 2014
