The Daily Star has reported that Juventus are closing the net on PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, who has been strongly linked with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Juve have reportedly had top scouts watching the 20-year-old play in recent games, as they mull over whether to make a move for him in the winter or next summer’s transfer window.
So what’s the impact for each of the English sides also thought to be interested in him?
It would probably be slightly more of a blow to Manchester United because of manager Louis van Gaal.
LvG was the Netherlands boss during the World Cup where he had a chance to work up close with Depay.
Should the winger opt for a move which doesn’t involve joining United, it’ll be a blow to the coach as well as meaning that United miss out on one of the brightest talents in European football.
However, United aren’t short of midfield options with Angel Di Maria capable of playing down booth flanks and Adnan Januzaj not even able to get into the squad at the moment.
Spurs have cover down either wing with Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli among others all capable of playing wider positions.
They tend to play a wider formation than Manchester United but have plenty of cover, which reduces the severity of the impact if Depay does link up with Juventus over a move to White Hart Lane.
The only area it really creates an immediate impact for Spurs is in terms of the club’s ability to attract similar, top quality European talents as they push on looking for a place in the Champions League.
Depay would be a top signing for either side but United would struggle to fit him into their team while Spurs already have cover in his position.
