Sakho: I'm No.15 at West Ham to honour this Chelsea legend

West Ham United forward Diafra Sakho says he wears number 15 at West Ham United in honour of Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

West Ham United striker Diafra Sakho has revealed that it was because of Didier Drogba that he wears the number 15 shirt at Upon Park.

The French striker has been a revelation since arriving at the London club during the previous transfer window and it appears that Hammers fan may have to thank the Chelsea striker for the role that he played in the switch.

Drogba convinced Sakho to make the move to England when his agent rang up to ask for his guidance on a potential move to the Premier League and he was full of praise about English football.

Indeed, Sakho has revealed today that he still seeks advice off the experience front-man now when he has a problem.

"I would say it’s Didier Drogba [Sahko's idol]. He’s helped me a lot to grow as a player and a person," Sakho said to the London Evening Standard.

“He is the reason why I have taken the No15 shirt at West Ham [the same number Drogba has at Chelsea]. It’s to keep that sense of belonging.

“I was lucky in that my agent, who had known Didier Drogba for some time, spoke to him on my behalf.

“He asked Didier for his advice on a new player coming here to England. More importantly, since Didier heard about me, he has spoken to my agent a lot, giving advice about how to behave, how to handle myself in the Premier League. That has helped a lot.”

Sakho will have been glad that he listened to Drogba's advice, after endearing himself to Hammers supporters already.

The powerful striker has caught the eye with his performances since moving to England and has wasted no time adapting to the new league.

He already has four goals to his name and managed to notch against Manchester United at the weekend.

His strike in that game was not enough to stop his side from losing, but Sakho will still have been encouraged by the impact that he has made.

The hope is that he will be able to keep this scintillating form up, as West Ham look to build on a positive start to the season.

Sam Allardyce has been tasked with making his team play a more attractive brand of football this campaign and he has made a successful attempt of it so far.

This is largely down to the pace of Sakho stretching defences, and Allardyce will be hoping that he continues this blistering form as the season progresses.
