Manchester City's £32 million signing was praised for how he responded by his teammate
Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaelta congratulated fellow defender Eliaquim Mangala for his performance in their 4-2 win over Hull City at the KC Stadium, despite scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty.
The Argentine praised the £32 million signing from Porto for putting those setbacks behind him and helping the side secure a big victory in the Premier League.
Zabaleta is quoted in the Manchester Evening News, saying: “I said to him after the game ‘Congratulations for the game’. Sometimes you can make mistakes, but he showed real character and personality in the second half to go onto the field and do well for the team.
“Everyone makes mistakes. I did it in my last game against Chelsea, getting sent off and letting the team down because then we only had ten men. It was probably the same for him at Hull.
“He scored an own goal and gave away a penalty but then he did really well to keep playing well and he was fantastic in the second half.
“As defenders, we have to deal with this, it’s part of the job. I always look at the reaction and we saw it from him in the second half.
It's good for Mangala to have such encouragement from his teammates as he settles into life at the Etihad Stadium. There are bound to be errors in the opening games at a new club, and defensive errors get punished more than most.
Mangala has looked like a powerful individual from what we have seen of him so far, and has all the attributes to be a fine defender. With Vincent Kompany alongside him, he has one of the best around to learn from.
Now, he will look to build on his second half performance, and eradicate the errors from his first-half display on Humberside.
