Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly a long-term transfer target of Manchester United.
The Germany international is one of the best midfielders in the world and has long been heralded as a player who will be a huge success if (and when) he leaves Borussia Dortmund for a bigger European club.
The 23-year-old has been out with a back injury since August 2013, but he could return to the radar of the Red Devils next summer or even as early as January.
That’s because Gundogan will return to action after over a year on the sidelines after the international break in October.
‘I feel that I'm edging ever closer to my former self’, Goal.com quotes the former Nurnberg star as telling Kicker. 'My comeback isn't too far away any more. I could be back after the international break.
'I have already penciled out the entire day and I will thoroughly enjoy my comeback. I felt like a 90-year-old when I had just picked up the injury.
'I never considered the option that I could be forced to retire from football, but it was obviously the worst experience of my career'.
Having joined Dortmund from Nurnberg in the summer of 2011, Gundogan established himself as one of the best players in Europe.
A central midfielder with playmaking abilities, Gundogan will be looking to return with a bang and will hope not to get injured anymore. Whether United return for him in January or next summer remains to be seen.
