Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been speaking following his competitive debut for the club against West Ham United.
The England international arrived from Southampton in the summer, but injury has prevented him from making his first Premier League appearance until this weekend.
Shaw was part of an unfamiliar United defence that also included another debutant – Paddy McNair – along with Rafael and Marcos Rojo. But despite the tender age of some of those on show, Louis van Gaal’s side came away with a vital 2-1 victory.
Following his first competitive outing in United colours, Shaw has been speaking with the club’s official website.
“It was a tough debut I would say,” Shaw said. “Overall I’m really pleased with how my debut went but the main thing, for me, was to get the win.”
With so much change in the United back-line, the teenager revealed the preparation that had taken place in the build-up to Saturday’s match, while also explaining what van Gaal had said regarding the club's young players.
“We focused a lot during the week on how we were going to set up,” he added. “We all knew what we had to do and, at the end of the day, the manager said it as well – It doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you are going to put 100 per cent in and play your best. It’s all you can do.”
Shaw and McNair certainly did that, and they will both be hoping this is the start of outstanding careers at Old Trafford.
