Robin van Persie: Why Manchester United’s win against West Ham United in Premier League was ‘vital’

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie explains why it was ‘vital’ to win against West Ham United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie was understandably delighted with his side’s victory over West Ham United on Saturday.

The Red Devils survived the second-half sending-off of captain Wayne Rooney to edge past the Hammers 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Van Persie, who scored the second goal for United midway through the first half, explained what made the win so special.

'I think this goes even further than three points', the Netherlands international told MUTV. 'It was absolutely vital to get the three points for everyone’s belief and the fans’ belief. They were right behind us and were absolutely great'.

Van Persie probably had last weekend’s shock result at the King Power Stadium in mind when he spoke of ‘belief’.

Louis van Gaal’s side were cruising to victory over Leicester City as they were 3-1 up by the hour mark, but then the Foxes launched a sensational comeback.

Four goals in the space of just 21 minutes and a sending-off for United saw Leicester win the encounter 5-3, leaving many to ponder on the Red Devils’ leaky defence.

United’s defence was called into question against West Ham on Saturday as well, but this time they managed not to slip up.
