The best images from a tense win at Old Trafford...
It was a strange day for Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday.
A home win is rare enough for United these days - but the result and performance was perhaps the most encouraging aspect on a day of highs and lows, for a change.
What they could have done without, of course, was Wayne Rooney's petulant, disgraceful kick that got him sent off in the second half. Rooney is now captain of both his club and country - and is paid the small matter of £300,000 a week. If that isn't enough to stop him from kicking a player above the knee, what is?
Despite Rooney's red card, United held on for a solid 2-1 win against West Ham. Goals from Rooney (when he decided to kick the ball instead of his man) and Robin van Persie put the hosts 2-0 ahead. And they looked good value for their lead.
Some sloppy goalkeeping from David de Gea, however, and Rooney's red card made for a tense finish as the visitors pulled a goal back and even had a Kevin Nolan equaliser disallowed for offside.
The fact that Man United held on without conceding further will no doubt be a source of encouragement for Louis van Gaal - and so will the performance of 19-year-old Paddy McNair. Here are the best images from yesterday's game, including celebrations from Van Gaal and Van Persie, youngsters McNair and Tom Thorpe - and the moment Rooney realised his game was over. Enjoy...
