Phil Neville reacts to Paddy McNair's Manchester United debut

Phil Neville has hailed the debut of Manchester United youngster Paddy McNair.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Phil Neville has praised Paddy McNair, who made his debut against West Ham at the weekend.

The 19-year-old was called into the side due to a defensive crisis, with senior players injured and Tyler Blackett suspended.

It was a little of a surprise to many to see McNair get the nod over 21-year-old Tom Thorpe but he acquitted himself well, winning praise from Neville as United saw out a 2-1 victory.

McNair, who started his career as a midfielder in the club's academy, did not win any tackles, but he made more successful clearances (13) than any other United player.

Against a team which ranked higher in the Premier League than any other for cross completion, coming into the weekend, his contribution was vital.

While disappointing not to notch up a clean sheet on his debut, three points and simply playing all 90 minutes is a positive way to start.
