After the stunning 20 minute capitulation against Leicester City last week, Manchester United needed a reaction to that 5-3 defeat as West Ham United came to Old Trafford in search of another scalp having seen off Liverpool at Upton Park a week ago.
Yet goals from Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie handed United a 2-0 lead in the first half, before Diafra Sakho pulled one back against United's once again shaky defence. Despite an onslaught from the Hammers after Rooney's second half red card, United held on for the win.
Following a testing week for the Red Devils, they simply had to just land the three points and move on after the nightmare at the King Power Stadium, and van Gaal had young centre back Patrick McNair to thank after the 19-year-old produced a crucial header to keep West Ham at bay late on.
After the game, a number of United players took to social media to air their thoughts on the game, with new signings Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera all delighted to grab the three points, whilst goalkeeper David de Gea looked back on his time at the club having made his 100th Premier League appearance for the Red Devils on Saturday.
