Liverpool morning news: Sterling contract talks; £10m loan star nets winner

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Liverpool

Liverpool are finally set to open fresh contract talks with Raheem Sterling according to a report.

The Sun claims the Reds are keen to tie down the teenager to a new long-term deal and are set to open discussions as stories linking him with a potential move to Real Madrid continue.

Sterling’s current deal does not expire until the summer of 2017, but with his development continuing to impress it is no surprise Brendan Rodgers wants to tie him to the club for the long haul.

In other news, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said he is far from finished as a top-class player in quotes published by FourFourTwo.

Speaking following the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday, in which he scored the opener, the England international said, “I can still compete with the best players around. It’s nice to remind people that although I’m 34, I can still run, I can still play and I can compete with the best players around.”

And finally, Liverpool loanee Divock Origi scored the only goal of the game in Lille’s 1-0 win over Bastia on Saturday.

The Belgian international signed for the Reds in a £10million deal in the summer, but he is spending this season in Ligue 1 and scored a vital goal to help the French side to second in the table.
