Herrera v Kroos: Who has had the best start to the season?

Toni Kroos Germany

How does Real Madrid's German international compare to Manchester United's Spanish midfielder?

Prior to David Moyes' dismissal as Manchester United manager, the club were heavily linked with a move for then-Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos.

The German international was approaching the end of his contract at the Allianz Arena and rumours were rife that Moyes wanted him to solve the midfield issues at Old Trafford.

But then the Scotsman left the club, Louis van Gaal ultimately took over and Kroos headed instead for Real Madrid.

It remains to be seen how true the claims are that Kroos had agreed to join United only to make a U-turn when van Gaal took charge, but it is worth considering how well he is doing in Spain compared with Herrera since his move to England.

Herrera has scored two goals already for his new club, netting in consecutive matches against Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City, while Kroos is yet to find the net for his new side.

The German star has however provided three assists in La Liga, compared with a single effort from Herrera in the Premier League.

As most would expect, Kroos's passing accuracy is considerably higher than that of Herrera, with the Real man having a 93 per cent accuracy compared with the United player's 88.9 per cent in the league to date.

Toni Kroos 0 3 2.5 93.2% 3.33 1.80 0.7 6  540

Herrera has outperformed Kroos in terms of both the average number of tackles and the average number of interceptions made in the league, although the latter outdoes him when it comes to both key passes and scoring attempts.

Kroos has made two more league appearances than Herrera thus far, after the Spanish player was side-lined for a brief time through injury.

In truth there are things that both players do extremely well and, while Kroos may have added additional attacking threat and composure from central areas, Herrera is not afraid to get stuck in, while his ability to score from midfield is something United have been crying out for.
