This stat could see Graziano Pelle hailed as signing of the summer

When Southampton announced the signing of Graziano Pelle, few would have expected the Italian forward to have made such an impact in such a short period.

With Southampton occupying second place in the Premier League table, Pelle already has four league goals to his name, having made a fantastic start to life in the English top flight. His most recent strike, during the Saints' 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers was simply scintillating; an overhead kick worthy of winning any match.

Signed from Feyenoord for just £8 million, the 29-year-old already looks an early contender for signing of the summer window. Nonetheless, a brief glance at his long-term form, and his recent scoring streak will come as little surprise.

Perhaps more importantly to the St Mary's faithful, since his arrival, Pelle has scored scored more Premier League goals than the club's summer departures - Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Calum Chambers, Dejan Lovren and Luke Shaw - combined. An important achievement considering the heartache Saints fans were forced to endure during the most recent transfer window, as one-by-one, the club's most influential players made their exit.

In spite of this, Ronald Koeman’s new-look Southampton side are sitting pretty in second place, having defied all pre-season expectations.

The Dutchman's clever transfers - the likes of Dusan Tadic, Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster - have played an integral role in this early-season form, with Pelle establishing himself as the focal point of the South Coast club's re-generated attack.

For just £8 million, he already looks a very astute purchase, and if he can continue the scoring form that he has shown, both in the Premier League and during his time in the Netherlands, Southampton will continue to exceed expectations.
