Liverpool are reportedly planning to make a move for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.
Reports suggest that the Frenchman is unhappy at the Bernabeu even though he’s only just signed a new long term deal and the Daily Star suggests Liverpool are the side poised to try and take advantage.
“Spanish news website Fichajes claim that Benzema is currently unhappy at the Bernabeu, and that the Frenchman is currently assessing his future at the club despite signing a new contract in August,” reports the national daily.
“Those reports have prompted the Reds to prepare a winter bid for the striker, who has scored 113 goals in 243 appearances for Los Blancos.”
Whether Liverpool need Benzema is another matter.
They already have two very solid centre forward options in the form of Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli, who joined the club late in the summer transfer window from AC Milan.
The suggestion that Liverpool could target another striker may be born out of the inconsistency produced by Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini when they have been called on by Brendan Rodgers this season.
Luis Suarez’ departure was always going to hurt the club but Rodgers has added sensibly in a number of areas to improve the attack of the side as they try and compensate for his goals.
There’s no doubt that if the Reds could pull off a deal, it would be a fantastic piece of business and another top quality player would move to Anfield.
However, with Cristiano Ronaldo also being tipped to leave Real Madrid in the near future, it’s extremely doubtful whether Carlo Ancelotti will want to lose such an important attacking player halfway through the season.
It’s a case of wait and see how this one develops over the next couple of months.
