According to reports in Spain, Chelsea attempted to lure Lionel Messi to Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window.
Spanish international Cesc Fabregas was arguably the most controversial to move to the West Londoners, but if reports are to be believed then boss Jose Mourinho had previously attempted a far more outrageous deal.
In a report quoted by Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, Catalan channel TV3 claim that the Stamford Bridge outfit tried to buy Lionel Messi for €150 million during the summer transfer window.
“According to news channel TV3, Chelsea tried to buy Lionel Messi for €150 million during the summer transfer window. It was after the game against Atletico Madrid, when Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League that Jose Mourinho made his move. However, neither Barcelona's board nor the player himself had any interest in accepting it.” The report states.
It is not the first time Messi has been linked with a mega move away from the Nou Camp, as rumours circled last season of interest from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Argentine superstar, however, has always expressed his desire to remain with the club despite the departure of former mentor Pep Guardiola.
Last season was a struggle for Messi, but the Catalan’s positive summer has given the team fresh impetus and the 27-year-old now appears to be returning to his best.
