Released Everton striker wishes club good luck on derby day via Twitter

Apostollos Vellios will still be backing Everton to take victory from the tie with Liverpool - despite being released by the club this summer.

The early afternoon kick off in the Premier League this weekend sees Everton and Liverpool go head-to-head in the Merseyside Derby.

The big discussion before the game has been around strikers, specifically which one will get the better of the other out of Liverpool's £16 million signing Mario Balotelli and Everton's record signing Romelu Lukaku.

But one striker who won't feature in the game is Apostolos Vellios.

The Greek striker was released by Everton this summer after three and a half years at Goodison Park. The 22-year-old often caught the eye in his fleeting Everton appearances. He scored his three goals for Everton in his first 235 minutes for the club.

But a few injury problems and competition for places left him out of the first-team picture and, after a loan spell at Blackpool, he was allowed a free transfer this summer.

He joined Belgian side Lierse SK this summer, but is still an Evertonian at heart, and sent this message on Twitter this morning - backing the Toffees to get a coveted result...
