Manchester United player ratings: 19-year-old shines, Rafael also impresses

Rafael 2

United beat West Ham 2-1 on Saturday and Paddy McNair and Rafael stood out. Here's how the players rated...

David De Gea - 6/10

Enjoyed some good moments but was at fault for the goal with some terrible goalkeeping from a set-piece.

Luke Shaw - 7/10

Impressed on his Manchester United debut. United were still far from convincing at the back but defending for so long with 10 men - after Wayne Rooney's sending off - was a marked improvement on conceding five at Leicester City last weekend.

Paddy McNair - 8/10

For a 19-year-old youth academy prospect, McNair did superbly today. His diving header to clear the ball out of the penalty area at the end of the game, in particular, was spectacular.

Marcos Rojo - 6.5/10

Did his job and was an improvement on last week, although he certainly wasn't the most convincing United defender on the field.

Rafael - 8/10

Voted man of the match by Manchester United fans, the Brazilian right-back admitted he couldn't sleep after his side's poor showing at Leicester. He was much better this time around, defending well and providing a simply sublime cross for Rooney's opening goal.

Daley Blind - 7/10

Protected the defence well, if not spectacularly, especially when Man United were down to 10 men.

Ander Herrera - 6.5/10

Kept things ticking in midfield but came off injured in the second half. United fans will hope the problem isn't too serious for another of their big-money summer signings.

Angel Di Maria - 7/10

Was not as involved as last week but still produced his usual minimum high standard of performance.

Wayne Rooney - 3/10

The United captain was good in the first half, opening the scoring with a fine finish. But his foul to earn a red card was simply disgraceful. It seems some things never change. Rooney is now the captain of his club and country - but can anything stop him from doing things as stupid as kicking another player above the knee?

Radamel Falcao - 7.5/10

Without scoring, the Colombian's movement was brilliant, as he proved essential to his side's goals. Registered an assist for Robin Van Persie's first and United's second.

Robin van Persie - 7.5/10

Looks as though he can form a clinical partnership with Falcao. His goal was well taken and proved to be decisive.

Darren Fletcher - 6.5/10

Came on for Falcao after Rooney's sending off and helped his side defend their lead.

Antonio Valencia - 6/10

Replaced the injured Herrera with 16 minutes to go and had his moments.

Youngster Tom Thorpe was also introduced in the 94th minute in place of Di Maria.
