We compare the performances of Manchester United's Ander Herrera and West Ham United's Mark Noble over the season so far.

West Ham United supporters have constantly insisted that Mark Noble's form should have brought him into starting contention for England.

The central-midfielder has become the most influential figure in the Hammers squad, yet his form has gone un-noticed by those in the international set-up.

Noble, rather surprisingly, remains uncapped for his country and he has had to watch on whilst the likes of Aston Villa's Fabian Delph and Newcastle United's Jack Colback have been called up by Roy Hodgson in recent times.

It has become a source of real frustration for Hammers supporters, but if Noble wants to thrust himself right into the limelight then he has a real chance to this weekend.

West Ham take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday and they will know that they play the Red Devils at one of their most vulnerable moments in living memory.

United's defence has been exposed and Sam Allardyce's side will head to Manchester sensing blood.

The eyes of the nation are firmly focused on United's progress under Louis Van Gaal and another defeat would only heap further misery onto a side who are facing ridicule for the first time in modern history.

Crucial to West Ham picking up a shock victory will be the form of Noble in the match.

The midfielder is all-action, and he will be required to get in amongst United's attacking players, whilst also launching attacks for his own side.

In that sense, he will be performing a similar role to the one that Ander Herrera has been given for United and it will be a chance for him to directly compare himself with the highly rated Spaniard, who performs a similar mandate.

So far this season, Noble has proved a match to the expensively acquired United midfielder and that just goes to show how well he is performing.

The fact that he it has gone unheralded by the Three Lions management hierarchy seems strange, given the lack of quality that the side have in the central midfield area, and if the 27-year-old keeps his current form up then surely he cannot go ignored for much longer.

Noble is creating more chances per game than Herrera, whilst also providing better defensive protection.

In most of the other notable areas, Herrera holds an edge, but not by much and, considering the Spanish international cost almost £30 million, it shows the standard Noble has been achieving for his side.

If he is to continue this sort of level of performance on Saturday it will certainly stand Allardyce's team in good stead and the duel between the two midfielders may just be the defining contest of the match.
