Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s Abou Diaby stance a case of all eggs in one basket?

About Diaby

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims that there are not many players who have as much quality as Abou Diaby.

Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger was criticised by fans and pundits alike for not signing a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid’s 2014 World Cup winner Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho were both linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium, but nothing materialised.

Then in midweek Wenger’s reasons for not signing a defensive midfielder came to light. Abou Diaby made his return to first-team action after a long injury lay-off against Southampton in the third round of the League Cup.

The 28-year-old’s career has been disrupted because of the injuries he has suffered in the last few years, but Wenger believes that the Frenchman will prove to be a vital player for his team as the season progresses.

In fact, Wenger has made some pretty bold comments about Diaby, claiming that signing a player like him is not easy.

‘Abou Diaby is a natural resource that I have because he’s a top-quality player’, Arsenal's official website quotes the Frenchman as saying. ‘If you look to find better quality players than Diaby on the market, you will have big problems’.

Wenger seems to rate Diaby highly, despite the fact that his injury could make him a different player. Players coming back from a long-term injury do not always return to their best, and it is a huge risk for Wenger to place his entire faith on the former Auxerre star.

It seems to be a case of Wenger putting all his eggs in one basket – if Diaby gets injured again or if he struggles to play well, then Arsenal will be in real problem.

Wenger’s belief that finding a player of Diaby’s quality in the summer transfer market is also something that many football followers will find hard to digest. Surely a quick look in Europe’s major leagues would reveal that there are much better defensive midfielders than the Arsenal star...
