Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain underlines the depth in Arsenal’s squad.

Arsenal attacker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been speaking about the depth in their squad.

The England international believes that the large squad will come handy for the Gunners as the season progresses.

Many of the Arsenal players have struggled with fitness and injuries at the start of the season following the 2014 World Cup, but the depth in the team meant that manager Arsene Wenger could still name a strong starting line-up.

'Lots of the squad came back at different times and we obviously had the three German boys who were World Cup winners and only came back on August 11', the 21-year-old told the club's official website. 'So for them it must have been quite hard to get settled so late in pre-season.

'It is tough fitness-wise when you’ve had three or four weeks off and come back in when your team-mates and everyone else in the Premier League is at full fitness and you have to catch up really quickly...

'One of the good things with the way the squad is now is that there is so much quality in numbers that the boss can pick from boys who are fresher than others at times, so that helps as well. That is going to important for the rest of the season as the games come thick and fast'.

Indeed, Arsenal have numbers in midfield and attack. Striker Olivier Giroud’s long-term injury has been compensated by the arrival of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United, while Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo are promising back-ups.

Arsenal have one of the most quality-laden midfield in the Premier League, but it is in defence that the North London club are short in numbers.

The injury to Mathieu Debuchy has exposed the lack of a ‘proper’ cover in central defence. If Calum Chambers plays at right-back in place of the Frenchman, then an injury to Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny could leave Arsenal in deep problem, despite Nacho Monreal’s ability to play in central defence.

For Arsenal to have a successful 2014-15 season, there can be no more injuries in defence.
