Southampton players rejected a day off this week, captain confirms

Jose Fonte has revealed his players turned down the chance to have time off this week.

After the summer Southampton had not many expected them to have a good campaign in 2014-15.

The club lost a long list of top players this summer with the likes of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren all making a move away from Southampton this summer.

Add to that the loss of manager Mauricio Pochettino and it is plain to see that Southampton should be struggling.

However Ronald Koeman has arrived from Feyenoord and done a great job of replacing those that have left.

He has brought in Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Ryan Bertrand as well as Fraser Forster and Toby Alderweireld among others. Add to that his ability to keep Morgan Schneiderlin after he handed in a transfer request and the results have been astounding.

The Saints sit in second place in the Premier League behind the early pace-setters Chelsea and go into this weekends game with QPR full of confidence.

But they are not letting it get to them, as captain Jose Fonte confirmed the players had rejected a day off this week.

He told the Daily Echo:

“I spoke with Morgan [Schneiderlin], with Kelvin [Davis], with the more senior players, and we decided together that it would be better to come in the next day, because we want to win Saturday. Then we spoke with the manager and the manager said: ‘Yes, okay, that’s good’. We know what’s best for us. We all want to win, and if you want to win you need to be professional and to be professional we couldn’t have the day off.”

Real commitment there from the Southampton boys as they look to continue their good form at St Marys this weekend.
