On this day: Chelsea tried to sign Ozil; AVB on Mourinho rift

On the 26th September 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 26th September 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th September 2013…

Chelsea Nozil

A year ago today and Spanish media were reporting that Chelsea had missed out in a bid to sign Mesut Ozil.

The German star joined London rivals Arsenal in a club record £42.4 million deal on the final day of the summer transfer window.

But he joined them from Real Madrid, where he was an integral part of Jose Mourinho's Real side.

Ozil had been sensational under the Portuguese boss but he was not said to be supported by new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

However Mourinho's reported approach came too late, as he had confirmed a move to Arsenal. Mourinho was also said to be keen on Real pair Fabio Coentrao and Sami Khedira.

Herrera scouting

David Moyes was said to be on his way to watch Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera in action in Spain, a little under four weeks after a catastrophic bid to sign him collapsed.

The then United boss was a big fan of the Bilbao midfield talent but Ed Woodward had made a mess of the negotiations.

And despite Moyes losing his job United retained their interest and snapped him up this summer.

Bitter split

Andre Villas-Boas was discussing his relationship with Jose Mourinho.

The then Tottenham boss slammed Mourinho, whom he formerly worked with at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

But they suffered a bitter split whilst in Italy and AVB said of Mourinho:

“We had a great personal and professional relationship before that we don’t have now. I don’t think we need explanations on personal relationships and friendship. But our relationship broke down. I think we have mutual respect for one another and what we went through cannot just disappear. But it’s not like it was before. We were at a Premier League managers meeting in August, but we have not spoken, no.”
