On this day: David Luiz speaks out; United down Liverpool and recall defender

David Luiz Warm Up

On the 25th September 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 25th September 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 25th September 2013…

United beat Liverpool

A year ago today and Manchester United defeated Liverpool in the Capital One Cup. It was a game of many sub-plots, including Luis Suarez's return from action after his suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

But United came out on top with a goal from Javier Hernandez proving the difference at Old Trafford as David Moyes got one over his old adversaries from his time as Everton boss.

But Liverpool went on to have the last laugh last season. The Reds pushed Manchester City all the way in the battle for the Premier League title while United faltered to a disappointing seventh placed finish.

James returns

Meanwhile Manchester United were also recalling a defender from loan duties in the Football League.

The player in question was Reece James, who had picked up a thigh injury at Carlisle United. United fans may never have heard of him again, until he scored a brace in pre-season which suggested he might become a first-team regular for the side next season.

So far that has not been the case and a loan spell looks on the cards for the 20-year-old.

David Luiz speaks out

Chelsea defender David Luiz was speaking about losing his place in the team under Jose Mourinho.

The Brazilian had been left out of the Chelsea squad for a recent game against Fulham but he was not bothered by not being included:

"It was just one game. Sometimes when other players go out of the team, people don’t say anything. I don’t need to prove anything. Everyone knows who David Luiz is, I want to play football and enjoy myself on the pitch so when I have an opportunity to play, I want to enjoy just that..."

But Luiz continued to not impress the Chelsea boss and he was happily flogged to Paris Saint-Germain for a silly amount of money this summer.
