This season at Newcastle United has been particularly worrying, but amid the darkness there was a spot of light last night.
The performance of Adam Armstrong, on his full debut, against Crystal Palace is one which has buoyed the supporters of the club who have had little to celebrate since the opening of the campaign.
The Magpies are still looking for their first league win of the season, but Armstrong's display in the Capital One Cup last night was one of the major reasons behind their progress.
The 17-year-old was handed his first start for the club in their 3-2 extra-time victory over Crystal Palace and he played a starring role in their success.
Armstrong set-up two goals during the contest, including Paul Dummett's late winner, and he will now be hoping that he can make an impact on the first-team on a more regular basis.
Pardew has already shown the faith that he has in his better youngsters by giving Rolando Aarons his first-chance this season and Armstrong looks likely to be the next to make the step-up.
Newcastle take on Stoke City on Monday night and Armstrong will be hoping that he did enough to convince Pardew he is ready to stay in the Magpies' team for the Premier League match.
Many Newcastle supporters are certainly hoping that he will be able to start and below we compile some of the best reaction on Twitter to the youngster's performance.
The two goals will do Riviere's confidence the world of good, and Armstrong showed he'll start a PL game sooner rather than later. #nufc— Miles Starforth (@milesstarforth) September 25, 2014

Coloccini man of the match for #nufc, real leadership, but Adam Armstrong also impressive. Played as a 10, got touch, energy, real potential— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) September 24, 2014
Am not one for comparing players but I thought Adam Armstrong in the No 10 role last night had a bit of Jack Wilshire in him #NUFC— Leeroy #NUFC (@embleton01) September 25, 2014
Armstrong & Aaron's the future of #NUFC both have massive potential.— Chris (@cseden) September 25, 2014
442 with Cisse and Rivière from now on please. And Armstrong needs to be closer to the first team. If you good enough your old enough. #nufc— Rob Anderson (@mr_rob_anderson) September 25, 2014
