Manchester United latest: Van Gaal makes bizarre claim about his defence

The latest Manchester United transfer news, views and rumours.

Louis van Gaal

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has claimed that his side have been 'defending well' aside from their 5-3 defeat to Leicester City.

United surrendered a 3-1 lead at the King Power Stadium last weekend, leaving them with just one win in five league games.

During that time, Van Gaal's side have shipped a remarkable nine goals.

However, the Dutchman claims United have actually been 'defending well' as they have kept two clean sheets (against Burnley and a notably poor Queens Park Rangers side).

"When you look at our figures in the Premier League, apart from the goals at Leicester we are defending well," Van Gaal told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

"The average is less than one [goals conceded] per game. We are scoring a lot of goals, too. We are fifth or sixth in terms of scoring."

Lou Macari

Van Gaal will be without several injured defenders heading into his side's clash with West Ham United on Saturday and former Man United midfielder Lou Macari thinks he simply has to strengthen his back line in January.

“I was concerned in the summer, when we lost Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra,” he told talkSPORT.

“I couldn’t see Man United going out to replace them with three identical players. We didn’t buy any defenders, until recently.

“They bought forwards but I always thought the priority should have been defensively. The Leicester game has only reinforced my opinion.

“You’re not going to be in contention to win the Premier League title unless you get your defence sorted out. I’m hoping in the January transfer window they go and buy one, if not two, new defenders.”
