Arsenal news: Carvalho 'satisfied' at Sporting; Pires on Premier League

Pires Henry Penalty Discussion

All the latest news and gossip from Arsenal this morning.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has been speaking to Goal.com about the club's priorities this season. The French wing wizard has recently joined up with FC Goa in the Indian Super League and he believes that the club must win the Premier League this term.

Pires stated:

"More important than winning the Champions League is to win the Premier League. The last time Arsenal won it was in 2004. It was a great memory for Arsenal fans. The Arsenal squad and Arsene Wenger have really good qualities.

"This year the team has spent on Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck. I believe in Arsenal as it’s my team and I hope they win the Premier League."

This summer Arsenal were heavily linked with the signature of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Portuguese international was said to be available for a fee in the region of £24 million up until the end of the Transfer Window.

Carvalho is the holding midfielder type that Arsenal have seemingly been looking for in recent seasons.

But today he has revealed he had no intention of leaving Sporting this summer. He told their website:

"Nobody ever heard me say I wanted to leave the Sporting or was dissatisfied. I've always been satisfied at Sporting.

“As things have not gone well for me start this championship, people think it is because I'm upset, but they could not be more wrong. I want to always be right, but that's football, sometimes things do not go on the pitch as we wish.

“I feel I can give more and can do better than last season. I know I have not been at the highest level, but eventually things will go well and I hope it will be in the next game.”

Carvalho was also linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.
