Chelsea player reveals action hero inspired his name

Goal-scoring Chelsea debutant Kurt Zouma has been speaking about his name.

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma has been talking about the origin of his name in an interview with the club’s official website.

The 19-year-old made his first competitive appearance for Jose Mourinho’s side on Wednesday evening, opening the scoring in the 2-1 Capital One Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.

And it is a strike that is likely to make the £12.5million signing from St Etienne live up to his middle name Happy.

Kurt Happy Zouma has been tipped to have a big future at Chelsea, but what of that wonderful name?

Zouma has revealed that his first name comes from a character played by Jean-Claude Van Damme in the film Kickboxer.

Van Damme played Kurt Sloane in the movie, and Zouma revealed, “In the film, he helps everyone and is super strong. So my parents decided that if they gave me that name I’d be hard and always have a smile. Apparently it worked.”

Having marked his debut in such fine fashion, the next job for Zouma is to break into Mourinho’s first-team plans more consistently. He has age on his side, but one suspects he will only be truly happy when he is out there on the pitch, doing what he does best.
