Manchester United have been linked with a number of potential new players in recent days.
Yes the transfer window is not only closed but locked and bolted with the next one more than three months away, but the speculation remains rife in regards to potential future Manchester United targets.
Louis van Gaal may have just splashed £150million on some headline names but with the club still in desperate need of quality midfielders and experienced centre-backs the rumour mill keeps on churning.
Here we take a look at the top five players to be linked with United this week.
This one really did come out of nowhere, with the Spanish international linked with a sensational – and highly unlikely – return to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson did not want to let him go in the first place, but since returning to his homeland Pique has won the lot with Barcelona and has been a mainstay in their defence, racking up 269 appearances in the process.
The 27-year-old would greatly improve United’s back-line but surely this is about as likely as van Gaal getting Mats Hummels to Manchester.
Just when you thought the Arturo Vidal rumours had gone quiet, they stir once more. Reports in Italy claim United still want the Chilean and will move again next summer.
It has been suggested that van Gaal believes it will be easier to tempt Juventus into business than it will to get Roma to part with Kevin Strootman, speaking of which…
The Netherlands international continues to make the gossip columns in England, to such an extent that Roma issued a statement earlier this week claiming the British press were wasting paper continually printing such speculation.
Strootman is the ideal midfielder for United, but for that very reason he is unlikely to arrive. In truth, the club should have moved for him when he left PSV Eindhoven rather than waiting until he had made the switch to Rome.
Another Roma midfielder has been linked with United this week in the form of Radja Nainggolan. The Belgium international has been suggested as a viable alternative to Strootman, and the 26-year-old can operate either as a central midfielder or directly in front of the defence.
He is what United need, and is a more likely option than Strootman or Vidal, but having only recently signed permanently for the Italian side, again the move is unlikely.
An unfamiliar name on the list but one who could ultimately become a star: Mile Svilar is a 15-year-old goalkeeper who currently plays for Anderlecht and is reportedly attracting interest from United…along with a whole host of other Premier League clubs.
