Recent reports have claimed Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar is set to discuss a new contract at the club.
The Netherlands international had previously been linked with a whole host of Premier League rivals following his outstanding performances during the World Cup and the fact that his current deal expires in the summer of 2015.
But the Mirror has since claimed Vlaar is ready to sit down with the club to discuss his options, and it could be one of the most important conversations Paul Lambert has for quite some time.
Villa are on the up, there is no doubt about that. Not only have they started the new Premier League campaign in fine form but they are also in possession of some of the most exciting young talents in English football – most notably Jack Grealish, who is clearly embracing what is sure to be his breakout campaign.
At 29, Vlaar is right to consider his options, but he is clearly settled at Villa and has grown into arguably their most important player.
When you consider that Gabby Agbonlahor and the rejuvenated Alan Hutton have recently put pen to paper to end speculation about their own futures, and Grealish and Fabian Delph are tipped to do the same, Vlaar’s decision has been made easier for him.
It seems there will be no mass exodus from Villa Park this summer, despite the club going into the new season with eight players in the final year of their current deals. And if Lambert can keep the momentum going Vlaar could be a part of an exciting new era at the club.
He may decide the time is right for a new challenge, but there is a challenge already laid down at Villa – the challenge to push on, attempt to get back into Europe and take the club back to where it once was.
