The creators of the open-world action game Sleeping Dogs, United Front Games (UFG), revealed their latest title on Monday - Triad Wars. Following a Reddit AMA with the devs they have revealed further details about the new game.
Community Manager James Baldwin, Senior Producer Justin Bullard, and Design Director Steve Ferreira were on hand to answer player questions.
Some players were concerned about the Free to Play aspect of the game, worried that players who invest more cash in Triad Wars' content will have an edge over other players. The devs said that their 'guiding principle is that gamers should be having fun, first and foremost,' and that they 'aren’t interested in nickel and diming people, but instead want to build a game that players will keep coming back to, because they love it.'
They also stated that they'll be using the beta testing phase to determine how they will monetize Triad Wars, and that 'you shouldn’t ever have to pay in order to enjoy the game.'
Talking about the actual gameplay within Triad Wars, Steve Ferreira said, 'you'll be playing against real players online a synchronously,' and there's 'a strong strategy and rpg component but we think of this as a action strategy game. Definitely not an rts.'
Characters from Sleeping Dogs will also appear in Triad Wars, although the Ferreira said 'Triad Wars is primarily about the character you create.'
Asked why the developers took the direction of making an online-only PC title, instead of a Sleeping Dogs sequel, the devs said, 'we love the story and cop drama of Sleeping Dogs as much as you, but we also believe Triad Wars is something new and fresh, and will be equally as exciting, just different.'
In response to a question about the possibility of a Sleeping Dogs 2, UFG said, 'right now we are totally focused on making Triad Wars as awesome as it could be - but would love to continue making games in the Sleeping Dogs universe.'
Whilst Triad Wars is a PC exclusive at the moment, UFG don't rule out the possibility of a console release.
Triad Wars is due for an early 2015 release on PC.
