Reported Arsenal target Joseph Yobo has been speaking about the rumours linking him with a move to the Gunners.
The former Everton centre-back is currently a free agent, and as a result he has been talked of as a possible solution to the Gunners’ defensive issues given that the club only has three senior centre-backs to call on.
Yobo had been touted as a possible short-term solution, as was former West Bromwich Albion defender Diego Lugano, but the ex-Nigerian international has denied Arsenal have already made contact.
In quotes published by the Daily Independent, Yobo said, “I read Arsenal was interested in me; it was news to me.
“There is no formal contact with anybody. I know Arsene Wenger admires me a lot and wanted me to replace Sol Campbell some years ago, but Everton blocked the move.
“He wanted me to partner Kolo Toure in defence; I was younger then. If negotiations are taking place, I am not aware. Maybe the club is talking with my agent.”
At 34, Yobo may still have something to offer Arsenal if they did make a move, but given that nothing has come following the initial speculation, one suspects this is one transfer rumour that will never be anything more than that.
