Middlesbrough came agonisingly close to pulling off a major upset against Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Championship side Middlesbrough came mightily close to tripping Liverpool up at Anfield.
The North-East side drew 2-2 in normal time, and lost 14-13 on penalties, in a shootout which seemed to go on forever.
Bamford scored the crucial extra-time penalty to send the game to spot-kicks, only to miss one and then score another in the shootout.
Goalkeeper Blackman conceded 14 and saved one in the shootout, but also stepped up to score one himself past Simon Mignolet.
Both players took to Twitter after the game to speak of their near-miss...
Great experience playing at Anfield, great team effort on to the next one keep the support up #UTB— Jamal Blackman (@Big_Blacks) September 23, 2014
Both Blackman and Bamford are both England under-21 internationals, but this was one of the biggest stages each have played on.
Bamford featured in the Championship play-off final for Derby last season, but the experience of playing at Anfield in a competitive game will likewise be an experience he will never forget.
The narrow margin of defeat will only leave the pair wanting more, and should inspire them to kick on at Middlesbrough last season.
Making it through at Chelsea won't be easy, especially for Blackman with Thibaout Courtois in front of him, but the match will be invaluable in their learning of the game as they continue to shape their careers.
