Should West Ham regret not signing 'unique' Chilean?

Chilean international Mauricio Pinilla was widely linked with West Ham before joining Genoa this summer and he is impressing at his new club.

Mauricio Pinilla could have signed for West Ham United but he ended up at Genoa and the well-travelled marksman is already a hit for the Grifone.

When it became clear that the 30-year-old was leaving Cagliari, West Ham were on alert but never made a move for Pinilla.

And they may wish they had because he has made a lightning start to life with Serie A side Genoa.

Pinilla scored a late goal to help Genoa down Lazio 1-0 last weekend and also found the target in Week 1's defeat against Napoli.

Genoa local newspaper Il Secolo XIX has lavished praise upon Pinilla stating: "The unique striker has Marcelo Salas in his sights."

Salas, the best Chilean striker to play in Serie A, hit a total of 36 goals in Italy, while Pinilla now has 34 and is expected to overtake The Matador.

It would be some achievement for a striker who has often not been given the respect he deserves and labelled something of a journeyman.
