The Japanese games company celebrates its birthday today.
Many of us regard Nintendo as a videogames company first and foremost, and I'm sure many also would be surprised to hear the company celebrates its 125th birthday today. Thats right, Nintendo was established in on 23rd September 1889 and it originally created handmade Japanese hanafuda playing cards.

It wasn't until the 1970s that the Nintendo we mainly know about was spawned. The company's first success with videogames was through the Game & Watch in 1979, and then with the Famicom console in Japan 1983. The Famicom came to the West in 1985, was given a facelift, and renamed the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short, and the rest is history.

My first memories of Nintendo are receiving my first Game Boy for Christmas, which came with a bunch of games. I would later come to buy the SNES, N64 and Gamecube. I now own a Wii U, and the games so far still seem to have that same Nintendo vibe they've always had.
