The Champions League Group E is one of the toughest groups, but AS Roma forward Gervinho is confident of making it through to the last 16.
The Italian club have been pitted against Bayern Munich, Manchester City and CSKA Moscow, but the former Arsenal man believes that they have enough quality to finish in the top two in the group.
‘Of course we have some big teams in our group, but it’s not like Roma are completely unknown either’, the 27-year-old Ivory Coast international told Fifa.com. ‘We’ve got just as much chance as the other three sides.
‘Although it’s been four years since we’ve taken part in the Champions League, we have players in our squad who are very familiar with it. We’ll have the benefit of their experience. We’re very hopeful’.
Roma do indeed have a very strong squad – that was evident on Matchday One when they brushed aside CSKA 5-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Gervinho was a star for the Giallorossi against the Russian club as he scored twice, while former City defender Maicon was also on the target.
However, Roma are far from certain of progressing past the group stage. Bayern, who edged past City 1-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, are the strongest team in Group E and are one of the top three favourites to win the Champions League.
City’s Champions League credentials are still in doubt, but Manuel Pellegrini’s squad has a number of world-class players who will be hungry to succeed in Europe.
It is not going to be easy for Roma, but they are going to make it harder for the rest of the three teams in the group.
