Three chances created, three dribbles: United man gives fans reason to smile

Angel Di Maria Argentina

Manchester United's Angel Di Maria had a match to remember, despite defeat at Leicester this weekend.

Despite the attacking brilliance of Manchester United, Angel Di Maria and his team-mates left empty handed from the King Power Stadium after surrendering a 3-1 lead to lose 5-3 to Nigel Pearson's side.

The Argentine's sumptuous lob midway during the first half put United 2-0 up and they looked set for a second successive victory, before a dramatic collapse in the second period sealed their fate.

He recorded three attempts at goal throughout his 76 minute spell, scoring once and assisting Ander Herrera from another. The Spanish international diverted Di Maria effort past Kasper Schmeichel to score United's third of the afternoon.

The former Real Madrid winger impressed for Louis van Gaal's side, with his magical goal capping a strong solo attacking performance. He proved a creative force in the centre of the park, orchestrating three key passes and completing three of six attempted take ons - a 50% success rate.

His innovation is unrivalled by his Manchester United team-mates and this was evident on Sunday. Already this term, he has fashioned more goal scoring chances than any other player in Van Gaal's squad.

Defensively he proved adept, too, and his efforts in this capacity suffocated the visitors for the most-part. He won two tackles, two interceptions and two blocks in total; a testament to his work-rate and desire to maintain complete control of proceedings.

It was a surprise to see him substituted in the second half and there's no doubt Leicester will have been delighted with his removal. One would imagine this change came down to fitness reasons, rather than a tactical decision on Van Gaal's behalf.

The Foxes went on to secure all three points, scoring twice in four minutes, following his departure. A coincidence? Perhaps.

This proved a harrowing defeat for the Old Trafford faithful, with Di Maria's display emerging as one of very few positives. The best is yet to come from the Argentine international, but he certainly looks capable of restoring the magic at the club.
