Blizzard cancel Titan after seven years of development

The mythical next-gen MMO from the World of Warcraft creators has been abandoned.

Since 2007, Blizzard has had an MMO project under wraps known as Titan. Said to be outside of the company’s main three franchises (Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo), the game was to bring a new MMO to co-exist with WoW that would build on the experiences Blizzard already had with the most successful MMORPG to date.

Although Blizzard never officially announced Titan, the company has continued to acknowledge its existence, with a version said to be in a playable state in 2011, and reports last year that development on Titan had been rebooted following a large proportion of the team working on it being moved to other Blizzard projects.

Now Blizzard are stating the project is cancelled in an interview with Polygon.

"We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs," said Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime, “"So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together.

"We didn't find the fun," Morhaime continued. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

Another issue for Blizzard lies in the company not wishing to restrict themselves solely with MMOs "We don't want to identify ourselves with a particular genre. We just want to make great games every time.” said Morhaime.

Indeed Blizzard made the point that smaller titles the likes of Hearthstone and the upcoming MOBA Heros of the Storm are helping the studio to realise they don’t need to pool resources to focus on big grandiose projects.

“Maybe we can be what we want to be and inspire groups around the company to experiment, get creative, think outside the box and take chances on things that just might thrill people," said Chris Metzen, Blizzard's senior vice president of story and franchise development. "Maybe they don't have to be these colossal, summer blockbuster-type products."

Sadly if you were waiting in anticipation for new a big Blizzard MMO things aren’t looking too good. "I wouldn't say no to ever doing an MMO again," Morhaime said. "But I can say that right now, that's not where we want to be spending our time."

What are your thoughts on all this? Are you saddened to hear Titan is cancelled, or do you think Blizzard are right to move onto new things?
