Has Raheem Sterling suggested Liverpool's targets for the season have changed?

Sterling has said the side has enough quality to get into the top four, when maybe they should be title challengers.

After finishing within two points of the Premier League champions last season, and spending over £100 million on players this summer, you'd think Liverpool would be targeting going one better this season, by winning their first league title since 1990.

But after a start which has seen two wins and three defeats from their opening five Premier League games, Liverpool aren't showing credentials of potential champions.

Raheem Sterling is quoted in the Liverpool Echo suggesting that the title may not be the objective for the Reds this season, saying: “We have definitely got the quality to make the top four. It’s down to us to get things right and get back to playing the way we all know we can.

“It’s [their form] concerning but we have got to put it behind us and go again. Our focus has to turn to the next game now. We need to bounce back.”

The next game for Liverpool is the Capital One Cup against Middlesbrough at Anfield where the Reds will be keen to bounce back, but most Reds will see the Merseyside derby with Everton on Saturday as hugely important as the Reds look to get back to winning ways in the league.

Currently, Liverpool lie seven points off the pace after five games, which is pretty substantial gap at this stage of the season, though there is time for it to be made up, but Liverpool are going to have to string a good run of results together soon.

It was said by many at the start of the season that consolidating their place in the top four would represent a good campaign for Liverpool given they have made nine new signings that will take time to bed in, and the extra demands of the Champions League were tipped to take their toll on the side.

As this is an almost transitional period for Liverpool this season, consolidation in the top four wouldn't represent a bad season, but Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his desire for silverware during this campaign. Qualification for next season's Champions League and a trophy would be solid to say the least.
