‘I wish one day that I can be like Scholes,’ says United midfielder

Ander Herrera has been speaking about the former Manchester United star he wants to emulate.

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has been speaking about his hopes for the future.

The Spaniard has impressed since returning from injury, scoring against both Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City; although the latter game will be one the summer signing may want to forget.

For all his goal-scoring prowess, Herrera failed to dominate the midfield on Sunday alongside Daley Blind, with the Foxes running riot in the final half hour. But Herrera will have learned from that, and he appears to have very clear ambitions now he is at Old Trafford.

In an interview with MUTV, the 25-year-old said, “Goal-scoring is not one of my best qualities. But I think it’s very important for midfielders.

“The best midfielders in the world like Paul Scholes scored hundreds of goals. I want to make and score more goals and I wish one day that I can be like Scholes.”

Herrera has slotted well into United’s squad since his move from Athletic Bilbao, and even when you consider their recent setback at the King Power Stadium, there is no doubt the Spanish star has improved the club’s midfield.

Can he emulate Scholes’ achievements at the club? It is highly unlikely anyone will. But to aspire to follow in the footsteps of one of United’s greatest ever players is admirable and just another reason why the club’s fans are likely to take to Herrera even more than they already have.
