Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp: This is how Louis van Gaal can prove himself to be a genius

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp seems to doubt Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal’s credentials.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is one of the most respected football managers in the world.

The Dutchman has managed the likes of Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and has been successful at all of those clubs.

However, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp does not appear to be entirely convinced, at least not of Van Gaal’s reputation of being a ‘genius’.

The ex-England international made the comments in his Daily Mail column following United’s 5-3 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

‘It doesn’t take a great tactical mind to go out and sign Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria’, wrote Redknapp. ‘Any United fan could have done that. It’s not rocket science. But fixing the United defence is another matter. Now we really will find out if Louis van Gaal is a genius’.

Redknapp’s comments about Van Gaal do appear to be a little disrespectful. After all, the Dutchman has a glorious history and a track record of winning titles.

However, it cannot be argued that Van Gaal has to fix United’s defensive problems - and fix them quick.

On Sunday, everything seemed to be going well for the first 60 minutes against Leicester when the Red Devils were 3-1 ahead and seemingly cruising to a comfortable victory.

However, United collapsed in the final 30 minutes of the match, and in the space of just 21 minutes conceded four goals and had a man sent off.

It will be interesting to see how the Manchester outfit bounce back in their next game against West Ham United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
