Wenger confirms Gibbs injury, comments on Giroud 'refreshment plan'

Arsene Wenger Looks On

Arsene Wenger addressed several areas at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Sunderland game.

Arsene Wenger says his players can be proud of the performance they produced against Bayern Munich.

Wenger defended his stars following the 2-0 first leg loss at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Sunderland game.

“The players can be proud because they put in a quality performance against Bayern. We just have to get on with it,” said the boss.

He also suggested that Arsenal’s season is placing a great physical strain across his star players.

“It's difficult to adjust to playing in three competitions and physically it's very demanding.”

Wenger has also confirmed that there will be changes ahead of the game against Sunderland, revealing that left-back Kieran Gibbs won’t play because of a hamstring problem.

Gibbs was withdrawn from the match against Bayern and replaced by Nacho Monreal.

“There will certainly be changes for tomorrow. That's for sure. Gibbs is out of the game.”

Wenger suggested that the decision not to play striker Olivier Giroud against Bayern Munich was something he's described as a 'refreshment plan' and not something to do with his personal affairs off the pitch.

"It is likely Giroud will be involved tomorrow. Resting him was part of a refreshment plan."

Wenger continued his defence of under fire German star Mesut Ozil, who has again been criticised following his performance, with his missed penalty one area being intensely focused on.

“At the moment we have to let him recover from missing the penalty,” said Wenger.

Wenger wasn't happy with Wojciech Sczesny's red card after the game with Bayern and he still isn't, criticising the referee and suggesting that a yellow card would have been sufficient punishment.

"I think the yellow card for Szczesny would have been enough, it was a decision that didn't make common sense."
