Everton had suffered a difficult start to the season after draws with Leicester and Arsenal as well as a defeat to Chelsea, but bounced back with a comfortable 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion last weekend. Then, Everton seemed to hit top gear in their 4-1 thumping of Wolfsburg in the Europa League, but they came crashing back down to earth today.
The game against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park got off to a great start as Romelu Lukaku slotted the ball home after just nine minutes to give Everton the lead, but it was downhill from there. Mile Jedinak converted a penalty for the Eagles to level the game up after a Tim Howard foul, and the American was again at fault as Frazier Campbell outjumped the goalkeeper to nod the ball home.
Yannick Bolasie then pounced on an error from Leon Osman to sweep past Howard, and whilst the Toffees were handed hope from a late Leighton Baines penalty, the game finished 3-2 as Everton once again slipped up at home against the Eagles in a shock defeat.
Everton fans were understandably disappointed on Twitter after the game, with supporters criticising the likes of Howard, Sylvain Distin and Leon Osman, as well as manager Roberto Martinez, with some questioning his credentials now after a difficult start to the season.
Here are some of the tweets from Everton fans this evening after their defeat...
People need to get off Howard's back, how many games has he kept us in? Could've easily lost 7-4 to Wolfsburg if it weren't for him #EFC— Douglas McD (@DougMcDougall3) September 21, 2014
In no way indicative of a poor season to come, merely an uncharacteristically poor performance. Palace were just better on the day #EFC— james bone (@jamesb367) September 21, 2014
Conceding 14 in 6 games just isn't good enough. Lucky to not concede only one vs West Brom and Wolfsburg as well. #EFC— Royal Blue Everton (@RoyalBlueEFC) September 21, 2014
Fans are guilty of over analysing again. If we simply cut out individual errors this season we'd have four league wins. #EFC— Chris Dunbar (@theblueeyedkid) September 21, 2014
Jagielka and Distin partnership clearly just isn't working any more. 13 goals conceded in 4 games say it all. Time to move on. #EFC— Leah (@Leah_Cor) September 21, 2014
I'm not buying fatigue they played at home 3 days ago and it's September - team selection and shape all wrong that lies with Martinez #efc— Alex Harrington (@aharry79) September 21, 2014
Stones is not a RB, need him at CB with Jags. It's noticeable when Coleman isn't there. #EFC— James Craig (@jamesacraig) September 21, 2014
Manager also at fault for making some strange positional switches & substitutions. Only bright spot was Atsu - lots of potential there. #EFC— Mike Peters (@djmikepeters) September 21, 2014
Gutted with that. Strolling at 1-0. Howard poor. Distin shocking. Stones out of position. Osman absolutely horrendous! Defence awful #EFC— David Leatham (@davidleatham) September 21, 2014
