Portuguese newspaper Record has revealed that Arsenal linked William Carvalho could be on the verge of a new contract at Sporting Lisbon.
The paper claims that the Portuguese star will earn five times his current salary in the new deal, which would remove any chance of Arsenal trying to do a deal for him this winter.
“William Carvalho will earn five times more. The revision of his maturity has begun and the aim is to reward him to the maximum extent possible,” reports Record.
Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for Carvalho during the summer transfer window along with reported interest from Manchester United.
Initial reports suggested that he was valued at around £35 million by Sporting before that figured dropped down to £24 million, with Sporting seemingly looking to offload him before the summer transfer window.
However, this update from Record appears to suggest that Sporting never intended to let him go.
There is hope for Arsenal if they still want to try and sign the holding player because while Record reports Sporting are happy to increase his wages five-fold, it’s still a small number compared to what he could earn at Arsenal.
“William Carvalho has one gross annual salary of around €100,000 but very soon, even this season, that could reach the next platform of €500,000.”
Arsenal have several players who earn more than €500,000 per month which suggests if Carvalho is a player motivated by finances then he may turn down any proposed deal and stay where he is.
However, it’s a catch 22 type situation because in that instance, Arsene Wenger would more than likely be put off of a move as he’d surely prefer a player motivated to join Arsenal from a professional point of view.
Carvalho can fill a position in front of Arsenal’s back four but if the deal happens, it’s important it happens for football related reasons and not because he can earn more cash.
