Sir Alex Ferguson almost brought Aaron Ramsey to Old Trafford.
Aaron Ramsey has become synonymous with Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side.
When he is on song, the Welshman represents everything that is right about Wenger's reign. Indeed, the Frenchman stuck with Ramsey through injury and moulded him into one of the Premier League's finest midfielders.
At the same time, when the 23-year-old has an off day, Arsenal fans have become so used to seeing him perform that they don't quite know how to express their frustration.
But imagine if Ramsey hadn't joined the Gunners?
According to Wales assistant Osian Roberts, that was very nearly the case - as Sir Alex Ferguson came 'very close' to bringing him to Manchester United.
Ferguson apparently spoke to Roberts, as well as Wales boss Chris Coleman, at a FIFA World Cup debriefing.
“He had a strong interest in how Aaron is doing because he was very close to signing him," Roberts is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
"He probably looks at it now as one that he lost out on and got away from him. It was really nice that he spoke about Aaron."
Perhaps in attempting to imagine Ramsey in a Man United shirt, Arsenal fans can just picture Danny Welbeck, the 23-year-old who recently left United for Arsenal in a £16 million switch...
After he opened his account in north London yesterday, United fans will hope he doesn't make scoring regularly into a habit at the Emirates.
