Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 0-0 draw away in Serbia last night as they secured a point in the Europa League.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has offered up a reason the club didn’t get off to a winning start in the Europa League against Partizan Belgrade last night.
The Frenchman supported a defence which managed to keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw but Lloris has suggested that had the pitch been better, the result might have been too.
“The result may have been different – We didn’t have enough movement and intensity, maybe because of the pitch,” he said after the game.
Nevertheless, a point away from home in an intimidating environment is a good way for Spurs to get their Europa League campaign off to a positive start.
It may sound like clutching at straws for cynics but one way for a club to level the ground against a higher quality opponent is to produce a substandard pitch, which doesn’t allow the best players to perform to their full potential.
Spurs were subjected to downright outrageous and negative abuse during the game, which has left the club with no choice other than to lodge a complaint with UEFA and attention switches back to the Premier League this weekend.
The 0-0 is not one of the best performances you are ever going to see from a Tottenham side but it extends the club’s unbeaten run and backs up the draw against Sunderland last weekend.
Spurs are very strong favourites to get the better of West Brom at home this weekend, where they will have a deck which allows them to build intensity and increase their attacking movement as Lloris suggests.
They are strong favourites for a win.
