Ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Villa Park on Saturday, goalkeeper Brad Guzan has been talking up the potential of defender Nathan Baker.
He may have been on the fringes of the Aston Villa first team for much of the season so far, but Nathan Baker was given a rare opportunity to impress against Liverpool last time out and, in the opinion of Brad Guzan, the 23-year-old did not disappoint.
The Villa keeper was full of praise for Baker’s efforts in the 1-0 victory over the Reds, talking up the defender during an interview with the official Aston Villa website.
"He's the guy who, if I am going into battle, I want him next to me. I know that he will have my back every day of the week,” he told the news provider.
Guzan singled Baker out for particular praise over the way he applies himself in training at the club and his overall attitude towards the team, despite being forced to watch from the sidelines for large portions of the games played so far.
And the Team USA international also thinks big things could come from the Aston Villa academy star, who has time on his side and could well improve further in the next five years to come.
"People might say 'that's not young.' But I'd disagree because you see some centre-halves who are hitting their absolute peak at 27, 28 or 29,” Guzan explained.
"For him, the amount of games he's been able to play in already is huge and you can't underestimate the experience of going through some of the difficult times we have had and to come out better for it.
"I really see a bright future for him."
Villa entertain Arsenal with the club looking to end a 15-game run without a home win against the Gunners.
Paul Lambert’s side do have some form against the Londoners though, having triumphed 3-1 on their last visit to the Emirates.
