Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno have played a big part in Liverpool's season so far. Manquillo signed on a two-year loan deal with the right-back expected to compete with Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan for the position. So far Manquillo has made four appearances in a Liverpool shirt and has looked impressive.
His fellow Spaniard on the opposite flank Alberto Moreno - a £12 million signing from Sevilla - appears to have solved what has been a problem for the position down the years. His goal against Tottenham proved his credentials going forward, whilst his defensive capabilities also look very solid.
Rodgers is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “They have both settled really well.
“They had been on our radar for quite a while.
“Alberto was well known as one of the top left-backs in Spain, while we were aware of young Manquillo through the Spanish national youth teams. Our scouts went out to watch him last year.
“He had very little playing time for Atletico because their right-back (Juanfran) was well established.
“But we knew he was a talent and felt his game when he did play was suited to how we wanted to work. There’s big potential there but he’s also able to affect the team now.”
Manquillo was probably brought in with a view to be developed as a player rather than a first-team player for mos of the season given the presence of Glen Johnson in the squad, but has so far shown he is more than capable of being effective part of the first team so far.
