Everton boss Roberto Martinez will be delighted with the way his side played to win the Europa League game against FC Wolfsburg last night.
One player who stood up and shone during the 4-1 win was left-back Leighton Baines who was superb defensively and productive going forward in attack.
Baines had a hand in both opening goals for Everton and was as reliable as ever when he took a spot kick, which he scored to further increase the Toffee’s advantage as the game went on.
Baines is arguably the best left-back in the Premier League at the moment and crucial in a performance that Martinez purred over.
“It was a really good evening. I thought we did a lot of talking about European nights at Goodison and it was phenomenal to see the fans and it was pleasing to finish with that scoreline,” said the boss.
“It's fair to say Wolfsburg have energy so we stopped their pressure and if you stop that you stop them being a real threat. We tried to play through them and use the gaps. We used our pressure better than them and got some opportunities by being well organised.”
The result and performance for Baines was also extra significant due to the inconsistent start the side has had to the Premier League season.
Everton’s defence is currently the worst in English football’s top flight and the positive performance will do Baines’ confidence the world of good as he approaches the club’s next few games.
He once again proved that in pressure situations he can be relied upon to step up and take set pieces, providing superb delivery and maintaining an impressive record from the penalty spot, which should only improve over the course of the season.
Here’s what Everton fans made of their defender’s performance on Twitter.
Baines performance is what we've been waiting for since he signed his new deal. I also think he should be Captain.— JSR (@TerryB1878) September 19, 2014
