98% Pass Accuracy - £13m Everton star impresses in dream European win

Everton Goodison Aerial

James McCarthy kept Everton ticking as the Toffees defeated Wolfsburg.

European nights are back at Everton, and the big match under the lights at Goodison Park did not disappoint.

A highly rated and expensively assembled Wolfsburg side, boasting Luiz Gustavo and Kevin de Bruyne were put to the sword by an incisive Everton attack.

Key to keeping the Toffees game moving was last summer's £13 million signing from Wigan, a Roberto Martinez favourite in midfield.

As Everton ran out 4-1 winners, McCarthy managed to complete 98 per cent of his passes, and didn't misplace a single pass during the first half.

That was not his only notable contribution to the cause, McCarthy produced a stirring last man tackle, sprinting back to dispossess on Aaron Hunt when he was through on goal.

What made it even more impressive, was that McCarthy did this in injury time, while Everton were still 4-0 up, demonstrating his commitment to the cause whatever the scoreline.

It showed his attitude is an exemplary one and why Martinez is such a big fan. Combined with his superb technical ability, the Northern Irishman is proving a key cog in the Everton side.

Everton's defence deserves particular credit too, not only did both full-backs Baines and Coleman score goals, but they stood firm in the face of Wolfsburg's attacks.

While Everton managed 12 efforts on goal, the German side had a staggering 27, with goalkeeper Tim Howard facing 13 shots on target, only defeated by an injury time strike from Ricardo Rodriguez.
